"Three new East Bay cases of West Nile Virus in dead birds and a surge of infected mosquitoes in San Joaquin County have health officials warning of a higher-than-expected threat this year from a virus that hobbled eight people in Contra Costa County last year and killed two of them.

Local vector control officials had predicted a mild year for the mosquito-borne virus, based on evidence that West Nile activity tends to slide after the second or third year in a region. Now, in its fourth year here, they are sounding the alarm for vigilance."

My sources tell me that local vector control has sounded the alarm, but why, you may ask have we not heard it? They have been silenced! But by who? or should I say whom? ..... possibly what?

The birds are amplifying hosts, developing sufficient viral levels to transmit the infection to other biting mosquitoes which go on to infect other birds (in the Western hemisphere the American Robin and the American Crow are the most common carriers) and also humans. The infected mosquito species vary according to geographical area; in the US Culex pipiens (Eastern US), Culex tarsalis (Midwest and West), and Culex quinquefasciatus (Southeast) are the main sources."
