25th Aquinas Lecture
The topic was Nature, Freedom, and Will. Several titans battled it out and here is my totals:
1st Place: St. Augustine - For his groundbreaking work on the will (introduces it as a notion). (20 points!)
2nd Place: St. Aquinas - For understanding 'nature' is not a power enduring in things & that the will, like, nature might fail to act when all conditions are present. (15 pts)
3rd Place: Bl. Duns Scotus - For positing that the will inherently is indeterminable, basic, immediate, and cannot be reasoned to... just is. (10 pts)
Honorable Mentions:
Avicenna - For his definition/distinction of per se in Nature. (5 pts)
John Peter Olivi - For his theory of the "One Instant Angel" (3 pts)
Aristotle - For his Model Theory & Ethics, but penatlized for having no words for 'will.' (1 pt)
Dr. Timothy Noone - For his awesome lecture (.05 pts)
Dr. William Frank - For his awesome questions (.03 pts)
Henry of Ghent - For showing up and acting as comic relief. (-5 pts)
That is my ruling... any questions?

Stephen Colbert Day declared
Published: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 2:46 AM ET

TORONTO (CP) - After losing a friendly hockey bet with satirical late-night pundit Stephen Colbert, the mayor of Oshawa, Ont. sheepishly conceded defeat on the show Monday night via telephone.
The punishment? John Gray's birthday on March 20 will be declared "Stephen Colbert Day" in his city, just east of Toronto. "Mr. Mayor, let me ask you something: How are you planning to spend your 'Stephen Colbert Day,' " the host asked Gray, as a graphic of a moose wearing a "mayor" sash appeared in lieu of a headshot.
"Oh that's right, it's your birthday. How old are you going to be? Old enough to know better than to take on Stephen Colbert?"
The mayor genially responded: "Hopefully in future, yes."
In recent months, Colbert - who portrays a know-it-all right-winger on his show - has been rooting for the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit after finding out the Michigan team had named its mascot Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle, as a tribute to him.
On Friday night, The Spirit beat the Oshawa Generals 5-4. Gray was among the 5,527 fans who attended the sold-out game.
Before his brief interview with Gray, Colbert reminded his viewers about the terms of the wager.
"If Oshawa wins, I will wear an Oshawa jersey on my show. But when the Spirit kicks Oshawa's moose haunches, I don't want to declare Stephen Colbert day on my birthday, I want to declare it on your birthday," said Colbert to cheers and applause.
Gray issued his challenge on a local radio station after Colbert urged Spirit fans to toss General Motors earnings reports onto the ice during Friday's game - an apparent jab at the auto-maker's plant that employs hundreds of Oshawa residents.
"Mayor Gray was there to watch his dreams crash to the ice like a sub-par GM financial report," Colbert said.
The financial reports were apparent retaliation for the Generals feting an earlier win against the Spirit by holding a teddy bear toss for charity.
A running joke on "The Colbert Report" is the host's inexplicable fear and hatred of bears. He called Oshawa's stunt an "obvious attempt to taunt me."
On Monday's show, Gray accepted his teams' loss graciously and promised to uphold his end of the bargain.
"I've already got a coffee shop downtown threatening to name a coffee after you and whatever the blend is, he promises that the spoon will lean to the right," Gray chuckled.
Colbert played the good-natured winner, too, saying he'd don a General's jersey on his show anyway.
With that, he stood up, untucked his dress shirt, pulled down his suit pants and flashed the Oshawa jersey, wrapped around his bottom like underpants.

Apparently he decided to blend together the last several roles he had as an actor into one horrible fashion accident: cowboy, 20's flapper, sea captain, upscale waiter and cyclops. Oh, the utter horror.

Bernini in Toronto
Last Updated: Thursday, January 11, 2007 10:51 AM ET

A life-sized Crucifixion sculpture by 17th-century Italian master Gian Lorenzo Bernini has been donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Corpus is a life-sized bronze by baroque master artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini.(Maggie Nimkin/Salander-O'Reilly Galleries/Art Gallery of Ontario)
Given to the Toronto gallery by the family of real estate developer and AGO board member Murray Frum, the bronze masterwork is entitled Corpus and is said to be worth $50 million.
"This is an extraordinary work in that it is made out of bronze that has a wonderful lifelike quality to it. It's almost as if the Christ figure wants to jump off of the wall," gallery CEO Matthew Teitelbaum told CBC News Thursday morning.
Corpus "is regarded by many as one of Bernini's long-lost masterpieces," Teitelbaum said, describing the Naples-born, Rome-based baroque master as "the great baroque artist of his generation" and "one of the greatest sculptors of all time."
Measuring nearly 1.7 metres high, Corpus was cast around 1650. Bernini made three versions of the sculpture, one of which was presumed destroyed during the French Revolution, another of which is held by the Spanish royal family.
The bronze sculpture Frum bought recently was long thought to have been created by an anonymous French artist. However, about three years ago, after new scholarship and study into the piece, Corpus was finally attributed to Bernini and is believed to be the cast he made for his personal collection.
An architect as well as a sculptor, Bernini also worked on Italian churches, most notably St Peter's Basilica, and designed a number of the popular fountains in Rome, including the Fountain of the Triton and the Fountain of the Bees.
The Art Gallery of Ontario plans to unveil Bernini's Corpus as part of its permanent collection this summer.(Maggie Nimkin/Salander-O'Reilly Galleries/Art Gallery of Ontario)
Frum pursued Corpus for the past couple of years and recently purchased it from a U.S. art dealer.
"Corpus was immediately appealing because of the beauty and emotion of the subject," Frum, a longtime supporter of the gallery, said in a statement Thursday.
"When we learned that it could be traced back to Bernini's own collection and was an object that he made for himself, it was clear we were in the presence of a unique work of art, a masterpiece that would be a highlight of any collection."
In December, Frum decided to donate it to the AGO, to which he had previously donated a collection of African art.
The Bernini bronze will be a tremendous addition to the permanent collection, said Teitelbaum.
"This work — in relation to the other Bernini we have and the other baroque works of art — really does allow us to tell the story of baroque art with real power. That's very exciting," he said.
"To get a work of art that changes your sense of a collection as powerfully as this does is a very rare occurrence."
The AGO will unveil Corpus this summer as part of its closing exhibition. The gallery, undergoing a major renovation designed by internationally renowned Canadian architect Frank Gehry, will reopen in 2008.
You fellows have another awesome reason to visit me in Toronto this summer.

Book Published by my sister

"Do you know those types of people who are just plain happy? No matter what happens, they always go around with a smile on their face, smelling the roses and petting the small dogs that life throws at them. John Doe is not one of those types of people. He is of the melancholy variety, the type that goes about bemoaning the roses and small dogs, who lives only because there seems to be nothing better to do, and to whom misfortunes just seem to be attracted. But when he goes off to Typical State College, his views begin to lighten up a bit through the help of his friends, his enemies, and things even more depressed than he is."
And that is just what's written on the back! It's fun, it's funny, it's short. It's a new look at undergraduate life, from the point of view of my brilliant sixteen year-old sister! See the work of a mind formed in Wodehouse, Waugh and Douglas Adams let loose on a period of life impending for her and still going for some of us. And it's cheaper to buy it from the publisher (publishamerica) than from amazon.
So, what have your little siblings accomplished?
